Biografia
Il “soul” , letteralmente l’ ”anima” afroamericana. Con questo termine è stata identificata sin dai primi anni ’60 quel tipo di musica, ma soprattutto quel tipo di canto dalle emozioni crude, senza compromessi, di stretta derivazione dal “gospel” patrimonio di artisti come Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin e Ray Charles.
In Italia ormai da quindici anni questa espressione musicale trova il suo centro nevralgico a Porretta Terme nell’Appennino tosco-emiliano dove si tiene il Porretta Soul Festival.
L’avventura fantastica di questo festival nasce nel 1988 grazie al persistente e incessante lavoro di Graziano Uliani, un innamorato della musica di Otis Redding, che insieme ad un gruppo di amici organizza una serata con Solomon Burke.
E’ subito un successo e da quella serata ha inizio il cammino straordinario di una favola musicale che è diventata il più prestigioso evento europeo dedicato interamente alla musica soul e rhythm & blues, con un riferimento particolare alla musica di Memphis, il Memphis Sound, la scuola musicale del grande Otis Redding.
In quindici anni sono passati da Porretta i più bei nomi del soul, molti di questi giunti appositamente per la prima volta in Europa. Altri, autentiche leggende, scovati in sperdute località del “deep south”, il profondo sud degli States e riproposti al pubblico e alla stampa internazionale.
Rufus & Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, The Memphis Horns, Sam Moore del leggendario duo Sam & Dave, The Bar Kays, Percy Sledge, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, The Sweet Inspirations, Millie Jackson, J. Blackfoot, Clay Hammond, Ann Peebles, James Govan sono alcuni dei nomi che hanno fatto diventare il Porretta Soul Festival un preciso punto di riferimento per gli appassionati di questo genere musicale in tutta Europa.
Gli addetti ai lavori hanno dovuto rivedere la geografia della musica nera, inserendo Porretta Terme nel percorso dei grandi avvenimenti musicali.
Per rinsaldare il legame tra la cittadina e il soul, una via di Porretta è stata intitolata a Otis Redding ed un parco a Rufus Thomas.
